The Chinese name for "Courtyard", a sub-brand of Marriot Hotels is "萬 怡 酒 店" (pronounced Wàn-Yí-Jiǔ-Diàn).

The latter two characters, "酒 店" (Jiǔ-Diàn), is Chinese for "hotel".

The first character "萬" (Wan) means "ten thousand" - or in this context, "prevalent and everywhere."

The second character "怡" (Yí) is short for "怡 庭," which means "palatial courtyard."

Put together, "萬 怡" is a poetic way to say "a palatial courtyard everywhere you go" -- or a "pleasant stay wherever you might journey."

Marriot hotel chain's rewards program is called "Bonvoy" -- a name inspired by the French phrase "Bon Voyage" -- to wish someone a good journey.

Thus, the Chinese name for Courtyard by Marriott promises "a royal courtyard-like pleasant accommodation everywhere in the world." Though not similar to the English name phonetically, the Chinese name is successful in its meaning -- a poetic reference to both the rewards program and the architectural caliber the hotel chain is known for.

萬 怡 酒 店 - "the hotel that promises you a royal courtyard-like experience everywhere in the world."
